This surgery is used to replace cornea with donor tissue to improve sight, relieve pain or when cornea gets damaged due to infection or illness. It can either be full thickness transplant (penetrating keratoplasty), replacing or reshaping the middle or front layers (deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty) or replacing back layers (endothenial keratoplasty) depending on the condition.
Hospital stay is usually not more than a day. It takes more time to get comfortable with penetrating keretoplasty as compared to others. It is important to take good care and avoid rubbing eyes or swimming till you are cleared.
