KIDNEY TRANSPLANT AND IT’S CRITERIAS

Know everything about Kidney Transplant :-

Kidney transplant is a procedure which involves transplanting a healthy kidney from another person into your body. This one new kidney will perform the function of both your failed kidneys. The new kidney is placed a few inches below your own kidneys and they are left in their place unless they are causing infection or high blood pressure.

The kidney may come from a deceased organ donor or from a living donor. The donated kidney may be from:

A living related donor – related to the person receiving the transplant, such as a parent, sibling, or child.

A living unrelated donor – such as a friend or spouse.

A deceased donor – a person who died recently and was willing to donate his/her healthy kidney.

The healthy donor kidney is transported in cool salt water (saline) that preserves the organ for up to 48 hours. This gives the health care providers time to perform tests to ensure that the donors and recipient’s blood and tissue matches.

Need Kidney Transplant :-

When kidneys cease to function, the toxic fluids accumulate in the body and are perilous for the human body. This condition is known as kidney failure or end-stage kidney disease.

When a patient loses 90 to 95 percent of his or her kidney function, they are considered to have End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). At this point, life-saving treatment becomes necessary. Treatment options for patients with ESRD are:

  • Dialysis (where an artificial kidney machine removes waste from the blood)
  • A kidney transplant from a living or deceased donor.

Sometimes, a patient with 85 percent loss of kidney function will undergo a transplant which allows them to avoid having to go on dialysis.

 Criteria for Donating Kidney :-

People fulfilling the listed criteria can donate a kidney.

Healthy adults:
Between the age of 18 to 55 years
Should not have any kidney related illness (acquired or hereditary)
Does not suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiac problems
The donor can live a normal life even with one kidney. In that case, amongst the two kidneys one can be donated.

Deceased donors:
Deceased donors can be divided in two groups:

Brain-dead (BD) donors
Donation after Cardiac Death (DCD) donors

Criteria for receiving Kidneys :-

The recipient of the new kidney should not have the following health issues:

No cancer or history of cancer

  • No Hepatitis
  • No cardiac disease
  • No active autoimmune disease (SLE)
  • No untreated urinary reflux or bladder problems
  • No mental illness
  • No infections

Kidney Transplant last for? :-

On average, a transplanted kidney from a cadaveric (deceased) donor lasts 15 years. Some transplanted kidneys only last a few weeks, while others function normally for 20 years or more. In general, kidneys from living donors last longer than those from cadaveric donors.

Kidney Transplant’s risk :-

There is always a possibility of a complication in any surgery. Some of the possible complications in kidney transplant include bleeding, infection, blockage of blood vessels to new kidney, blockage or leakage of urine.
The new kidney may be rejected by the body. It is a normal reaction of the body’s immune system to any foreign objects or tissue. The patient is given medication to reduce the chances of rejection.

Kidney Transplant Recovery :-

Recovery after transplant surgery. Hospital recovery for a kidney transplant is usually 5 to 10 days if there are no complications. The length of stay depends on your medical condition and needs. You’ll spend 24-48 hours in intensive care immediately after surgery.

To have a Kidney Transplant necessary :-

Causes of end stage kidney disease. Diabetes – These patients have a continuously high blood sugar. This high blood sugar can damage the filters in the kidneys, leading to long-term kidney damage and finally kidney failure.Another condition is called polycystic kidney disease which is an inherited condition.

Can you live with one kidney? :-

Most people who are born without a kidney (or with only one working kidney) lead normal, healthy lives. A person may have had one kidney removed during an operation in order to treat an injury or a disease like cancer. A person may have donated one kidney to a person who needed a kidney transplant.
